Del Mar (meaning “By the Sea” in Spanish) is one of the best-known beaches in Southern California. With its casual sophistication and the feel of a world-class destination, it is no wonder that it was listed in Time Magazine’s list of the 100 greatest beaches in the world. The affluent, relaxed community of Del Mar is situated on the northern coast of San Diego County. From the moment you arrive in this gem of a city, it is no surprise why this seaside community has served as a celebrity favorite since the 1930s. It exudes the glitz and glamour of Hollywood but in a more relaxed atmosphere. Its history involves well-recognized names like Bing Cosby, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, and Bill Gates to name just a few. Home of the renowned Del Mar Racetrack and Fairgrounds (where the “Surf Meets the Turf”) each year it brings thousands of people from near and far to enjoy a Day at the Races or a day at the Fairgrounds. Del Mar is served by the Del Mar Union School District, which includes eight K-8 schools. High school education is provided by the San Dieguito Union High School District.
